Alternatives to china's belt and road initiative
China's BRI is not sustainable project as it doesn't uphold the principles of international standards such as sovereignty, transperancy and multilateralism. So the like minded countries have come up with the following alternatives:
The Indo-Pacific Strategy: Initiated by United States, the Indo-Pacific Strategy aims to enhance infrastructure development, connectivity, and economic cooperation among countries in the Indo-Pacific region. It emphasizes principles such as transparency, rule of law, and respect for sovereignty.
Japan's Partnership for Quality Infrastructure (PQI): Japan's PQI aimed at promoting high-quality infrastructure projects that comply with principles such as transparency, economic efficiency, and debt sustainability.
Build Back Better World (B3W) : This initiative is undertaken by the G7 countries. It was launched in 2021, it would provide an alternative to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for infrastructure development of low- and middle-income countries. B3W seeks to address the $40 trillion worth required for infrastructure by developing countries by 2035.
The European Union's Connectivity Strategy: The EU's Connectivity Strategy aims to promote connectivity between Europe and Asia through sustainable infrastructure projects while ensuring environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
The Blue Dot Network: The Blue Dot Network is a collaboration between Japan, Australia, and USA aimed at certifying infrastructure projects based on adherence to high standards of transparency and sustainability.
India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) Project: Launched at G-20 summit in New Delhi. It aims to create a comprehensive transportation network, comprising rail, road, and sea routes, connecting India, the Middle East, and Europe. It aims to enhance connectivity, reduce costs, increase economic unity, generate employment, and lower Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. It is expected to transform the integration of Asia, Europe, and the Middle East through economic development by promoting trade and connectivity.
The Quad Initiative (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue): Comprising the India, Japan, Australia, and USA, the Quad aims to ensure security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. While primarily focused on security cooperation, the Quad members have discussed potential infrastructure development initiatives.
These alternatives provides better options for countries required infrastructure investment and connectivity projects while upholding international principles such as transparency, sustainability, and respect for sovereignty.
