Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of India. It is given to individuals for their exceptional service to the nation in various fields.

Commencement/History:-
The award was established by former President of India Rajendra Prasad on 2nd January 1954.
The concept of awarding this award posthumously was not there in the original statute declared in January 1954.
Provision to award posthumously was finally added in the January 1966 statute of this prestigious award.
The first Bharat Ratna was awarded to Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Sir C.V. Raman, and Chakravarti Rajagopalachari in 1954.
Award Announcement :-
 The award recipients are usually announced every year on Republic Day( 26 Jan).

Who Can Receive Bharat Ratna? And  Eligibility Criteria:-  

 Any Indian citizen, without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex, is eligible for the award.

The Bharat Ratna is awarded for exceptional service or performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavor. This includes arts, literature, science, public services, and sports, among others.

Recognition Process:

The Bharat Ratna is awarded by the President of India. Recommendations for the award made by the Prime Minister, Members of Parliament, and other eminent personalities.

Notable Recipients:

Over the years, Bharat Ratna has been awarded to many eminent personalities including scientists like C.V. Raman and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, political leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, social reformers like Mother Teresa, and artists like Lata Mangeshkar and Sachin Tendulkar.

2024 Recipients: - Karpoori Thakur  (politician and former Bihar chief minister) and Lal Krishan Advani ( Former politician and Deputy Prime Minister)

Presentation: -  The award typically consists of a medal and a certificate. Recipients may also receive a small monetary grant.
