China-Maldives relations are a bigger game of Geopolitics.

China-Maldives relations  are not bilateral, But a bigger game of Geopolitics. How India should approach?

The recent changes in Maldives foreign policy and it's closeness to Beijing are a bigger Geopolitics plan than it seems.

India and Sri Lanka have deep historic, cultural and economic ties. Sri Lanka being a neighbour and it's strategic location in Indian Ocean make it very crucial for India. But, today's world relations are governed more by Geopolitics rather than historic and cultural links. In this aspect China have taken the advantage of being economically stronger than India. That why China sealed the Hambantota and Colombo ports deals in Sri Lanka which raised the security concerns for India. Now, we see Maldives on the same path. But it is not only Maldives path, China have travelled a more longer route to reach out to Maldives, the second strategic location in India's neighbour in Indian Ocean. It is merely not the diplomatic relations between the two countries China and Maldives but a much more bigger game of Geopolitics. The Indian troops have been withdrawn from Maldives and at the same time Maldives has signed a military pact with China. Maldives and China also promise to elevate the relations to 'comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership'. Is it all about the relations between these two countries? No, definitely not. This all is about geopolitics. Turkey is also involved in the deal. Turkey is providing drones to Maldives for its maritime security. Pakistan also has a role to play with present Maldives government. It will also tries to increase more closeness with Maldives.

It is China's attempt to have military presence in Indian Ocean. It is an attempt to shift focus from Indo- Pacific to Indian Ocean. It is also an answer to Quad grouping. When USA called the Pacific region around China - "Indo- Pacific" China thought that India may increase its naval presence in this region. But India never tried to reach in the region except Quad exercises.
Indian naval ships rarely visit in the region (Indo-Pacific) to counter China. But China is continue reaching out into India's neighbour countries in Indian Ocean one after another - first Sri Lanka and now Maldives.  Thus, it is not only china's reaction to counter India's closeness to USA but also a well planned strategy to counter India militarily and geopolitically. So, just to provide economic aid and assistance is not enough to counter China's increasing presence in Indian Ocean. Therefore, the good question is that 'Should India also increase its presence in China's neighbour in Indo-Pacific?' The answer is yes. Initially it was not required but now it is a necessity to counter China's behaviour in the Indian Ocean. India also need to strengthen Quad by adding military pact and adding new members which have strategic locations in China's neighbour like South Korea, Vietnam and Philippines. India need to enhance its naval presence in Indo- Pacific region.
